Biriyani lovers, beware! Your biriyani might not be as COOL as it used to be.

By V Nikhilesh Paliath On 26 Mar 2019 | Category : Waste Management

When was the last time you enjoyed your biriyani in a wedding reception / community event? Or when did you buy your biriyani as a parcel? Your chances of eating biriyani from someones waste is high! Under the disguise of “Material for recycling”, India has increasingly become a favourite destination for exporting waste. It was not long back when Municipal solid waste from the city of New York was shipped to Kerala under the category Material for recycling. Used electronic equipments are also following suit. India’s prominence as a recipient of used / rejected / discarded material is on the increase since China has banned the import of Material for recycling. Roots of the network that imports material for recycling has become so deep that it has reached our dining tables. Import of Carton

To Compost or To Not

By Neha Joe On 4 Apr 2018 | Category : Waste Management

Composting is a simple yet at times, an overlooked solution to bio-degradable waste management. Composting is a method through which organic waste decomposes naturally under oxygen-rich conditions through the action of microbes. With the current incentives provided by Trivandrum’s Corporation to install a Bio-composter and the presence of Aerobic Bins in various locations in our city, it has never been  easier to make a difference. From the portable “Kambha” or the efficient “Bio-composter” for a household to the “Aerobic Bin” for an entire residential colony or school; there are a myriad of equipment to get your hands on. Not only would you be contributing to a sustainable future through composting but also you would benefit from the final nutrient-rich compost that could be utilised as a soil-enricher

Green Army Fellowship – An Initiative by Thanal, Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation & Green Army

By Gadha R On 8 Jan 2018 | Category : Waste Management

This fellowship is basically designed by Thanal and Corporation of Trivandrum. It is originally a three month work. This is needy time for waste management. If we continue do the present system, i.e; throw- away culture, it is going to affect us very badly and the results will be irreversible. So I recommend this fellowship to encourage the decentralized waste management in not only Kerala, but also in our Country.

Explore Your Options For Menstrual Hygiene

By Shradha Shreejaya On 21 Feb 2017 | Category : Waste Management

When a woman’s choice of a product has such immense consequence at a health, societal and ecological dimension, it fails me why we as a collective still ignore the need to demystify and remove the taboo around such conversations. Product availability and businesses are still predominantly a man’s world, which dictate the choices that we are given in terms of our bodies’ needs. For this to change, we women ourselves need to come forward, shed inhibitions (like how our uterine linings do with so much beauty every month) to engage and educate people around us. For as long as there is silence, there stands no hope for our collective futures.

Think waste

By Mr. Sridhar Radhakrishnan On 24 Dec 2016 | Category : Waste Management

As a community known to clean conscious, we have quite strangely messed up our handling of discards so much that the State Government had to actually float a major campaign flagship project for reinstating the paradigm back into the minds of the people Haritha Keralam under Nava kerala Mission

But that is todays story. and this is a story that may eventually end up as another well meaning but miserably tragin one. And that is because the script could soon be rewritten by skeptics of this state - the elite, upward and west moving Malayali, contributing so much to global thinking, but stuck with local inaction!

Seeking Out Abubacker!

By Ms. Sreedevi Lakshmi Kutty On 26 Jan 2013 | Category : Waste Management

Since the last few years every time I visited my parents on vacation, in Trivandrum, my mother would tell me that Abubacker was asking about me. He has been a regular visitor to their home since many years, and collects what we call ‘waste’ or what is called ‘discards’ in zero-waste lingo. Abubacker began enquiring about me since the vacation I cle ... read full article
