The Thanal internship proposal is to fundraise to start a youth fellowship programme for environment starting with agriculture. Targeted to support young men and women below 35 years of age who want to pursue their interest in sustainable agriculture and build capacity to earn their livelihood along with grassroots work, the fellowship will financially support the selected young people for a period of one to two years during which they will be provided training, exposure, practical hands on work experience and capacity building to take up sustainable agriculture as a livelihood.
What these young people will do after the program is augment the meagre number of young farmers, address the gap in skills found in many farming communities (regarding sustainable farming), run seed banks, create model farms, run organic farming workshops and also hand-hold the (slowly) increasing number of first generation farmers and maybe some of them would also become grassroots farmer leaders of tomorrow!
Thanal is currently mentoring a couple of young men who are currently working with the farmers of the Thanal organic bazaar, working on land leased by Thanal to produce seeds, setting up urban kitchen gardens. They are working closely with the senior activists in Thanal, travelling with them, gaining enormous insights into broader issues, participating in policy discussions etc.
We plan to provide a stipend of Rs 4000-5000 a month to these fellows and we would like to run this program through individual support from friends and supporters of Thanal. We appeal to you to make a donation to us ranging between Rs 3000 – Rs 10000.
