The Draft Rules under the Biodiversity Act was prepared in 2009, following two national consultations. The draft was adopted by the National Biodiversity Board and published for discussion in 2009. Comments were sought and a national consultation was also organised to discuss both the ABS and this draft.

    Shradha Shreejaya, an ecologist and founder of SMKC, pointed out that the plastics used in sanitary napkins were the reason for skin irritations and rashes that the menstruating women often develop. “They use chlorine bleach to whiten the products. The cotton, if inorganically grown, will have traces of pesticides in it.. The dioxins emitted can cause reproductive and developmental problems, interfere with hormones and cause cancer,” she said.
